This is an account of my first ayahuasca experience, which I can happily say changed my life. Ayahuasca is a plant medicine or “entheogen” containing the psychedelic compound DMT (Dimethyltryptamine). In the shamanic tradition of South America, it is considered a sacred healing plant spirit.

Ingesting it in the appropriate ceremonial setting and with highly trained practitioners can provide a healing and growing experience that comes through a deep cleanse on the emotional, spiritual, mental and physical levels.

Ayahuasca is not to be fucked with. I pity the fool who goes into an ayahusaca experience without due respect and preparation. It can send you on a journey into different dimensions of consciousness, and to areas of your life you have not consciously processed.

It can be like an outer body experience, which sends you to exactly the places you have spent your life trying to avoid. But the lessons you receive, if you can receive them, can help you understand life on an entirely different level and unlock previously hidden dimensions within yourself.

People often want a frame of reference: Is it similar to mushrooms, LSD or cactus? No. This is a different kind of experience.

I’ve sat on this article for a few years. I guess I wanted to see how the passing of time would influence my views. I was also conscious of hyping something that should be approached so carefully. I deliberated for a while on how to present my experience in a way that is helpful and authentic. In the end I just decided to let the words flow onto the page, without any self-censorship or agenda.
