Okay, the RTX 3080 is currently as scarce as pigeon eyelashes, but there is no doubt that Nvidia’s new RTX 3080 is the best graphics card available today. It is a significant generational performance improvement over the previous RTX 20-series. When compared to the RTX 2080 or 2080 Super, that’s impressive, but when you consider that this nominally $699 card can not only match but vastly outperform the $1,200 RTX 2080 Ti, it really sinks in.

The difference it makes to ray-tracing performance is what really stands out from our testing. The first generation of ray tracing-capable cards required such a significant frame rate sacrifice that most people avoided using them, but that is no longer the case with this generation.

When you can now get ray-traced performance that outperforms the frame rates you’d get from the top card in the RTX 20-series without it, you know you’re dealing with a completely different beast. And, hey, the RTX 3080 can play Crysis.

Nvidia accomplished this by including a lot more CUDA cores in this 8nm GPU, as well as updated Tensor Cores (for extra DLSS goodness) and second-generation RT Cores to make with the ray-traced pretties.

The RTX 3080 may require more power (at least an 850W PSU) and be difficult to obtain, but it is the most desirable graphics card available today. That’s probably why it’s so difficult to obtain.

There have been few better red team alternatives to Nvidia’s high-end graphics cards than the RX 6800 XT. A highly competitive card that comes so close to its rival, with only a minor performance difference to the RTX 3080, is truly an enthusiast card worth considering for any PC gamer with 4K in mind.

It’s a close call between it and the RTX 3080, but AMD is pipped to the post with the finishing touches à la RTX. The RX 6800 XT is $50 less expensive, has better 4K performance, and has more VRAM than the RTX 3080. However, it’s easy to argue that spending an extra $50 on the RTX 3080 is money well spent: a small price to pay for improved 4K performance, ray tracing, and DLSS. All are available right now, with two years of developer support already in place. However, AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution is gaining traction among developers and provides solid upscaling that is worth enabling in supported games.

Nonetheless, we’re big fans of what AMD has done with the RX 6800 XT, a return to form for the Radeon Technology Group that injects some much-needed competition into the GPU market and provides a worthy red team alternative for any high-end gaming PC build.

The best deal Ampere for ampere, the RTX 3060 Ti is very similar to the RTX 3070. Both use the same GA104 GPU (with fewer SMs enabled on the RTX 3060 Ti), as well as the same 8GB of GDDR6 memory across a 256-bit bus.

While the RTX 3060 Ti is 17 percent less capable in terms of core count, it makes up for it with some judicious GPU Boost frequencies. That’s why we like it so much; it’s a great GPU for the full range of resolutions and, thanks to second-generation RT, has decent ray tracing capability as well.

If the RTX 3080 or RTX 3070 appear out of reach, the RTX 3060 Ti is a solid substitute. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of this graphics card is how it compares to the 20-series generation: it outperforms the RTX 2080 Super in almost every test.
