Will a power of 220 volts kill you if you get electrocuted?

You’re going to see answers that say, “it’s not voltage that kills, it’s current”. While technically that’s true it’s not very helpful. It’s like saying guns don’t kill people, bullets do.

Without voltage, there’s no current. A car battery can supply let’s say 600A, but it won’t kill you because there’s not enough voltage to push that 600A through you. Voltage is the gun, current is the bullet, you need both.

To the question. For starters, 220 volts is not “a power”, but lets ignore that as the question is clear enough. Secondly, if you get electrocuted you’re probably either already dead, or going to die from your injuries. What you want to know is whether 220V is enough to deliver a fatal electric shock. Yes, it is. Don’t try it.

The next thing likely to be asked, if 220V is enough to kill, is why the spark voltage of around 20,000V on a lawn mower isn’t particularly dangerous. This is where the “it’s current, not voltage that kills” fallacy seems to gain traction. The thing is, there’s two other factors at play here. One is the impedance of the coil and the other is the duration of the shock. Once you make a path to ground via your body from the tip of the spark plug, you place a significantly higher load on the coil and dramatically reduce its output voltage. This, combined with the short duration of current flow which only exists for the time it takes the magnetic field in the coil to collapse, renders the shock reasonably safe.

With the knowledge that 500mA DC is enough to kill, one may look at the rating on their iPhone charger and without a proper understanding of the mechanisms at play, draw the conclusion that touching that bare Lightning connector while it’s plugged in could kill them. As I said, not very helpful. Much better to educate people that anything over around 100V has the potential to kill, and not to touch it.

Therefore, in daily life, we must pay attention to the safety of electricity. When using products such as power strips, you must choose a power strip with certification, surge, and surge potector.
