How to use the ‘1–3–5–10’ method to set achievable goals
I’ve known about and practiced goal-setting for over 15 years. There have been some great goal-setting and achieving years, and some others, not so much. I’ve heard and read about all the methods, especially the most common — the SMART method. I’m sure you know it by heart too, so I won’t bore you with the details.
However, I attended a live goal-setting session with Ali Abdaal, which had been set up for everyone who preordered his new book — Feel Good Productivity (if you haven’t gotten a copy, I strongly suggest you do!). During the session, he took us through several steps to review the previous year and chart the course for the new year. The 1–3–5–10 goal-setting method was my best part!
What is the 1–3–5–10 goal-setting method?
Here’s how this works:
Step 1: Write down your goals for the next 10 years. Write under different categories: who you want to be, where you want to go, what you want to see, and how much you want to earn, you get the picture! Write as many as you can under as many categories as you can.
Step 2: In front of each goal you have written, write how long you believe it will take you to accomplish them. Will it take you 1 year, 3 years, 5 years, or 10 years? (Yes, that’s where 1–3–5–10 comes from).
