Agreed. As a first-year teacher, much of what I long suspected about the profession has thus far been confirmed: teachers are the ruling class in a mini-society, given power to classify people as winners and losers on arbitrary grounds (called “grading”), with all kinds of privileges relative to students, from better bathrooms to equipment access.

“If you like helping kids learn, why not become a classroom teacher?” Today, this is like asking: “If you like gardening, why not manage tomato pickers at a plantation?” In both cases, the interpretation of a calling is grotesque.
