I’m under no illusions about how reads and recommends influence Medium’s content purchasing, though I think that influence is limited compared to the heavily ad-dependent models of major outlets, which I hope explains the difference in subscription price. As for ‘editor’s choice’: I agree this is worth re-examining. What, in your view, are better ways to reduce a publication’s (and an author’s) dependence on popularity, clicks, etc? Right now I can see how ‘editor’s choice’ can be improved, but I don’t yet see a genuine alternative to it.
