Unbroken

by Jason John Bartholomew

I don’t see me in the same way you do
don’t need to change in the ways you want me to
you don’t seem to hold me in such very high esteem
so I can’t get on board with all of that, obviously

I ain’t a dog and I aint’t looking to be…
broken.

even if it’s true and I’m lacking self-clarity
if really am the monster you claim me to be
then I could fall to my knees begging god for mercy
but that wouldn’t absolve me of this responsibility
to love and be true to myself as best that I can
so I might walk thru this world unbroken.

but you can’t seem to forgive me for that

I own my mistakes; I won’t let them own me
I make my amends; I say my apologies
then I put it to rest; put it all behind me
It’s what I must do, it’s my only chance.
to walk thru this world unbroken.

if a man wants to own himself
he’s really has no choice but to accept
he’s gonna have to let some people down
or be crushed under all the demands on him

if man wants to be his own man
he’s gotta develop a thicker skin
‘cuz that’s just what it costs a man
to walk thru this world unbroken.

but we don’t have to forgive you for that.
