Beautiful essay Umair, that I enjoyed reading as always. But I am afraid you again in this one tend to overintellectualise the issues, and give too much credit to the average Joe. I don’t think most Americans feel any guilt at all about the past vile actions of their Country and their forebearers. Most of them don’t even know about them, and don’t care if they do. We are the shining example of Democracy, We can do no wrong!

They have watched so many Westerns with John Wayne and others shooting Indians that it seems a perfectly normal thing to do to them. The Indians attacked the stagecoach, didn’t they? Taking Texas, New Mexico and California from Mexico was but a pacification action… The Trail of Tears was just a relocation of undesirable people… Hawai was run by an incapable drunk king anyway, the Philippinos were savage… Cuba was too close for comfort… Allende was a Communist, and the Che an agitator… ETC…ETC…

A few Liberal Intellectuals do understand the nasty parts of American History and are not proud of it, but in my experience(and I married into a Southern family), the average American does not give a hoot, much less feel guilt about them. They have been brainwashed since Kintergarden to be Blinder Wearing Flag Waving Hand on the Heart Pledge of Allegiance Reciting Patriots.

Speak no Evil, See no Evil, Hear no Evil…
