My Father Passed Away Today

Today my father died. He was found not breathing in his small apartment, on the floor.

It seems this year has thrown me a basket of hand grenades in which I caught almost all of them. The most I can do is write this poem.

Life has drawn in the reins so old and weathered and worn

A good life, a bad life, just life — in the end it all gets torn

Happiness long forgotten, and sorrow much entrenched

I’ll try to remember the fine line, but there is not much a difference

May he finally sleep that never ending night.

For my father John J Kelly III, who passed away 12/4/2016
