“Music is a mile-marker for me. I can barely remember what I had for dinner last night, but when Paolo Nutini’s ‘Candy’ comes on, I can tell you — in excruciating detail — the color of the sun through the cattails growing in the pond at the far edge of my neighborhood as I listened to Paolo in the early summer of 2011. Over the course of my life, there have been songs that are wonderfully and inextricably linked to the places, people, and feelings I knew when I first found them. Fontaines D.C. was an unlikely addition to the list — they are loud and aggressive and their target audience is probably not Chopin die-hards with a laundry list of morose indie playlists, but in March of 2021 they were who I needed to hear.
‘Oh Such a Spring’ from their second album A Hero’s Death was my constant companion as I contemplated leaving Dublin (not coincidentally, Fontaines D.C.’s hometown — D.C. stands for “Dublin City”). As evidenced by the fact of my writing this at a firm based in the States, I left Dublin, though not for a lack of love for the city or the music it inspired. 4,000 miles away in a new D.C., Fontaines still keep me company.”
