Sharing is Caring….

As a young journalist it is important to realize what stories are going to be huge and go “viral” or become “trending”. Like it was stated in moodle… it is also important to realize what stories are considered “shareable”. Not every story that folks go on would be considered shareable.

For example, this past week was the presidential primaries in New Hampshire and I went down to Manchester with Tyler Cadorette. He spent a good chunk of the day feeding the social media “machine.” In that example, sharing a bunch of things over social media would be perfectly acceptable.

This tweet from Tyler was a good example of a “shareable” story in my eyes. It really interested Tyler and myself when we were speaking with the woman and as soon as we walked away from her Tyler said he was going to share it on social media. That is the kind of story that really gets people interested in what we are covering and hopefully it will bring them back to check up later in the evening or even make us one of their sources for news.

It is the fluff stories that people go on that really dont need to be shared as much. Sure there are some stories that could be put on social media but honestly a lot of the fluff stories can just be aired during the show and maybe have a quick newslinc write up. For instance, putting on social media that a donkey married a duck…. yea that is a very interesting story but it could wait until the show to be told. Social media should be used to share important stories that the public would like to know about. If we start flooding our timelines with random fluff… to some people we could lose all the credibility we have as a newssource.
