Kent State Mascot Conundrum

Ever since 1926, the mascot at Kent State has been a Golden Flash, which is a type of eagle.

Since that time, logos have ranged from a lightning bolt, to currently a golden eagle, so change has obviously been a common theme.

There’s no reason why that theme shouldn’t continue.

Around the campus, there are very few, if any, “Golden Flashes” flying around.

Walking around the community without seeing a black squirrel is almost impossible.

They stand out not only due to their color but also because of their fearless behavior.

Almost every day on campus, a black squirrel can be spotted running right alongside a person on the sidewalk.

Squirrels aren’t supposed to do that.

They’re supposed to be scared of us.

Not these creatures, though.

That speaks about the animal’s character.

It shows that they feel like they belong in this area under any circumstance.

Not to mention the fact that many people on campus talk about how they want to adopt one of the squirrels as a pet due to their “cute” appearance.

Black squirrels can be a perfect representation of Kent State.

No other school in the country can claim a black squirrel as their mascot and that would speak volumes about Kent’s ability to stand tall above other universities worldwide.

There are plenty of eagle mascots across the world from middle school going all the way up to professional sports.

Kent State has a golden opportunity to change the culture of the campus for good, and it’ll actually mean something.

It can show people that we’re unique.

It’ll show people that we’re aware of what’s going on around us and how significant things are.

Most importantly, it’ll show people that the university refuses to be pushed around or disrespected by anybody.

All the school has to do is pass another bill signifying that we will become the “Kent State Black Squirrels.”

It may take a little while to get used to but it’ll definitely be worth it.

What significance does a golden eagle hold in Kent?

What message does it send to other people?

That we like to be like everybody else by having a bird as a mascot?

Having a bird as our mascot gives the university a mediocre look.

Kent State shouldn’t settle to be mediocre, we should go above and beyond to make the necessary changes to become an elite university in America today.

That can start with a simple change of our school’s mascot to a black squirrel.

Minding my business- A black squirrel is seen here, enjoying a snack by himself in the grass. The city of Kent promotes black squirrels to a tee, yet, they’re not our mascot.
In the cut- A black squirrel sits in a tree as the cold, winter wind blows fiercely. The high temperature today was 25 degrees.
All dressed up- A black squirrel statue in the student center is ready for the holiday season. Winter break starts for all students Friday, Dec. 16.
Creepy creature- In one of the more uglier displays you’ll see, a black squirrel is seen here on the wall at the Nest. You can stop by and check it out throughout the week, as the Nest is open every day.
Represent Kent- A black squirrel is shown here in the downstairs lounge of the student center. the lounge is a nice place to go blow off steam if you’ve had a long day.
