This is the key point, and one which is being (wilfully, I can only assume) ignored by lawmakers. It isn’t only happening in America, either — in the UK, the government is currently proposing legislation that would force communications service providers to build ‘backdoors’ into their encryption. They seem completely oblivious to the fact that if there exists a backdoor for the good guys, there also exists a backdoor for the bad guys.
Thank you for your work in opposing these potentially catastrophic political attitudes, and I hope other politicians (on both sides of the Atlantic) join you in doing so.
