Republicans only need TWO MORE states to get to 34, at which point they could decide at any moment to unilaterally change the entire Constitution behind closed doors.
This statement is entirely fear based and one could of understood that fear if it were to come from a logical, fact based, and realistic conclusion. Unfortunately it does not. Firstly any request by the States for Congress to call a convention, must be specific in it’s mandate, otherwise it can be challenged. If those who want to seek a balanced budget amendment get their way and a convention is called, they can’t just meet and rewrite the constitution. The founding fathers themselves would not have included this if that were they case. Any proposed amendment that comes from such a convention could be challenged legally if it did not follow the original mandate. There have been several reports from different sources, such as the Department of Justice, the Congressional Research Service and the American Bar Association.
Other safe guards include the ratification process, it states in the Article V whether the amendment is proposed by Congress or the States it must be ratified by the states, 38 states need to ratify this, the convention itself can not ratify it’s own proposed amendment.
This fear mongering about the Article V Convention began with the John Birch Society (co-founded by the Koch Bros father) and now it’s being propagated by the center-left. This is a throw the baby out with the bathwater tatic. How and Why? Because they have failed at safe guarding their own interests in local and state governments, and their is real danger of them losing additional control. Establishment Democrats let the far right entities gain power and win a majority control in many of the states by ignoring the needs of their party locally.
We are all better served to protect our democracy by engaging in it. Get your support out there by getting the people involved in their government. This article suggests this, but the motivation is through fear, it’s not inspiring people, it’s making them afraid they will loose everything unless they support the DLCC. There is no guarantee that what DLCC is suggests as a resolution in this article will be promoted by them. If you follow the money, you will see that the majority of the money this group has collected hasn’t gone to state races. It has gone to Federal Senate Races through the Senate Majority PAC. How does this serve the people, how funneling money to Federal elections safe guard State legislators and their constituents needs? The irony is the DLCC run by State Legislators.
I agree with the need for citizens to get involved and take back the their local and state government if they feel their interests are not being represented. Yet I cant see how the DLCC is going to win any states if their pasts efforts have all been for Federal Senate races and dark money campaigns. https://www.opensecrets.org/orgs/summary.php?id=D000021031
