In Defense of Winter

As the cold, slushy, snow seeps through my worn boots,

I’m reminded that I hate cold weather.

This cold, white substance that only part of the

world knows. Why? Why does it exist?

The treacherous walk to class each morning. Left foot, right foot,

lifted high as I trudge through the knee-high snow.

My numb and tingling fingers, trying to grasp the doorknob.

The doorknob that opens the way to warmth.

The way the back end of my car drifts one way, then back the other,

as the snow flies from underneath my tires and I nervously try to remain in control.

The cold, blistering air that makes me feel as if I

may be picked up and carried away, that makes my nose turn a Rudolph Red color.

Everything is covered in huge heaps of snow,

cars,

houses,

streetlights,

trees,

street signs.

Then I remember the beauty of this powdery precipitation,

the quickly melted snowflake that lands softly on my tongue.

The snowball that finds its way down my thermal shirt,

And melts as it trickles down my warm back.

Starting the endless snowball fight in the backyard.

The snowmen sitting on front lawns, waving their 3-fingered stick-hand at me

on the way to work, making me crack an early morning smile.

The shimmering Christmas tree in the window, standing as

still as a statue. The countless nights

I sat watching as the glistening

snowflakes fell from the sky.

If I’ve learned anything it’s that I could be

somewhere where the sun never stops shining,

and my sun-kissed skin never fades. Then

I realize that I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
