8 Year Olds Hold the Keys
3 years ago…I asked my son:
“What do you want to be?”
He looked at me, wide-eyed with excitement.
I scoffed. A YouTuber? I rolled my eyes, and began to nudge him in the direction of something more practical. Something “respectable”.
Tactfully, I decided to go with encouragement, while secretly thinking this was a ridiculous assertion.
His passion for the absurd was not something I dared trample.
Fast-forward to 2016, where Snapchat and Musical.ly are more watched by kids 8 to 15 than Netflix and Hulu.
YouTube stars are more famous than Oscar winners. 🎥 College institutions hold little sway over high schoolers, as the absurdity of six-figure student loan debt has been exposed.
The world moves too fast for that marketing degree to hold relevance, especially as more valuable online courses can be had for a fraction of the cost.⚖
I can’t help but pay attention to all of this and be excited. Excited for my children to have a real shot at whatever they want. As much as people complain about cell phones being an extension of our beings, it is just a truth you have to get used to. 📲📲📲📲📲📲📲
Technology does not move backward. For the first time in history, each of us holds the keys to shape history, literally in the palm of our hand. It’s up to us to choose how.
