Milo Yiannopoulos in Damage Control Mode as Shady Grant Gets the Spotlight

January of this year, media glamour star Milo Yiannopoulos announced through Buzzfeed[1] a “Privilege Grant” exclusively for white men[2]. The website for the grant stated “Applications will open in Spring 2016. Privilege Grants will be awarded in early Summer 2016 to be available for Fall 2016 enrollment.” The grant was hyped through April all the while garnering over a hundred thousand dollars in donations. Yet, no money has been given out, and this has led to some highly questionable practices being brought to light.

To be fair to the people who donated, he only started depicting himself as a Space Martian relatively recently.

In a series of tweets[3], “New Normal Bot” revealed the existence of a PLC opened in December 2014 was being used for the Privilege Grant[4] that dissolved in May 2016[5]. The evidence presented would suggest the money was being funneled to a shell company run by Mr. Yiannopoulos instead of a charity.

Collaborating with these findings, Margaret MacLennon showed after being questioned that the funding went straight to the same address as the PLC in Mr. Yiannopoulos’s name.[4] This is despite the website explicitly stating on its donate page “ All donations made to the Yiannopoulos Privilege Grant go directly to recipients.”[5].

The Daily Beast has also published a piece[6] by Gideon Resnick about this scandal. In it, Mr. Resnick alleges that “the way in which the “Yiannopoulos Privilege Grant” accepted donations was unethical and possibly illegal”. It goes on to give quotes from legal experts elaborating on the legal aspects of charities. The article also claims members of the Privilege Grant denied the connection to Caligula Limited.

I reached out to Miss MacLennan to find out more about her participation in the grant (full interview can be read here[7]):

JK: How did you become Director of the Privilege Grant, and what responsibilities did you hold?

MM: Milo asked me about being the director of the Grant in January. It was perfect for cheek — a gay British male and a disabled Canadian female both running a bursary for the one group that doesn’t get to be a group — straight white men. It’s all well and fun as a troll, but behind the joke is the fact that post secondary can really change a life and that unless you’re in a victim group, you won’t get those few thousand extra bucks every year that can really make a difference in being able to attend. I was mostly going to be a public face that worked on the admin side of things. I’ve worked for years in customer service and secretarial occupations so I was happy with that, but I knew that we had a viciously steep timeline if we wanted to hand out awards by Fall 2016.
JK: Also on twitter you revealed the money for the Privilege Grant was forwarded directly to Mr. Yiannpoulos. Did you intend this as a means of showing potentially shady dealings?

MM: I posted the original PDF document that everyone who wanted to donate to the Grant was sent. I basically had it memorized because I wrote all the copy for the form letters I sent back to people.

At this point I’m concerned about the donors. Everything I tweet out should be taken with a grain of salt and investigated. Even though it’s a standard form, I know that bank transfer information is sexier than “hey, the Grant applications are late” and I hoped that others would notice it and notice that there are no applications to be had.

Later we added Swype as a secure means to sending money with a debit or credit card, and then the Store front where “proceeds” (I don’t know exactly what that entails) would go toward the Grant. I did not have access to the store’s financial information so I don’t know how much came from there.
JK: In your personal opinion, do you believe the privilege grant will eventually deliver? Also, do you believe reparations should be made to the donors in light of the delays?

MM: Because of the delays the donors should be able to request refunds, but it’s hard to request a refund of a bank transfer. You can get a refund easily through paypal, but not so much through the methods used by the Grant. I don’t know what info the bank would have, whether they would have names and contact info connected to dollar amounts in the bank account — there’s just so much muddled up that has to be untangled. I don’t think the Grant can deliver on this Spring 2017 promise. There’s just not enough time. Unless donors are pleased and happy with how the next few days are handled, that will be the determinant of whether the Grant will ever come to light.

After these recent revelations, Mr. Yiannopoulos has expressed renewed interest in the Privilege Grant for the first time in months. A new news section has been added to the website[9] with a fresh press release announcing a new administrative lead, Colin Madine, and a timeline for the grants: “The Privilege Grant is in the process of applying for charity status with the U.S. government. The current plan is for the Privilege Grant to run a pilot grant program for the Spring semester of the 2016–2017 school year, and then administer the full grant program for the 2017–2018 school year.”

Mr. Yiannopoulos, in a very nervous and trembling manner, has apologized fro and addressed some of the failings of the privilege grant in a video[10]. He attributes the lateness of the grant to being “overtaken and overwhelmed and overburdened” by his current big media tour. In the same video he introduced Mr. Madine who Mr. Yiannopoulos described as “part of the family, part of the furniture even” and his “number two”, noting the crude expression that entails. Mr. Madine was brought on to discuss where the donated money was going to counteract the allegations of fraud Mr. Yiannopoulos described as “weird conspiracy theories” (a common thought terminating cliché).

Got hit by hard hitting questions? Call it a “conspiracy theory” and hope they go away!

“Right now we’re- we’ve already started working with your [Mr. Yiannopoulos] lawyer to get everything set up legally.” Mr. Madine said. “Um, so we’re an official 501c(3) charity organization. Um, that’ll make it ship-shape legally, be it’s own entity, and, uh, that’s our first step.” This, along with the press release, confirms not only the implication Margaret MacLennon made that Mr. Yiannopoulos has been personally holding the money, but also that the legal and financial handling has been sloppy at best.

Mr. Yiannopoulos has also been promising to “match funds” from donors with his own money. In addition to the archived tweet from February[11] to your left, from a prominent live stream in April (7:27–8:35)[12], he explained in detail [emphasis mine]:

Um, the response has been extraordinary. A lot of private donors who would, uh, who’d want to support the project who would- <sic> would prefer not to have their names attached to it have come to me and said, you know, I’ll give you- I’ll give you some money, and I love this, it’s great. And we got, very quickly, past the initial figure I thought we would reach. And, uh, we’re at the stage now where we have two hundred thousand dollars pledged for the first year. Now what that means is we can give out, um, way more than they wish <unclear: all fifty grants than they wanted to> but I want to go a little further. And I want to raise two-hundred and fifty thousand dollars- to raise a quarter of a million dollars as our year one fund. This stream, and the next seven days, I would like for you to help me by contributing twenty five thousand of that remaining fifty thousand. I will match whatever you put in. I already contributed, uh, twenty five thousand to the fund plus, uh, money for, uh, administrative and legal funds, but I’m going to put in another twenty five thousand to match the money that- that viewers are- are, um, I hope going to donate. <interruption> That <unintelligible> one hundred grants for on hundred, um, young men in America, uh, who need, uh, help getting to collage.

Given funds to the Privilege Grant went to Mr. Yiannopoulos directly, this pitch of “matching donations” was a means to garner more funds under false pretenses. For him to match funds, the money would go straight from him to his own bank account. Shifty, to say the least.

In certain respects, the less known about what is exchanged between these two the better…

Mr. Yiannopolous’s dealings may come as a surprise to many, but this revelation is not all that surprising knowing the man adheres to (above left) and fraternizes with (above right) an outed shill[13]. Jamal Islambouli (GamingAndPandas) also used activism to promote his own charity schemes by feigning altruism while having a personal vested interest in said charities. Evidently, the proud “Cultural Liberterian” advocate does not adhere to one of its manifesto’s crucial maxims[16]:

Standing up for consumers and producers over hand-wringing middle-class panic merchants.

While some may be more forgiving towards Mr. Yiannopoulos’s pleas of regret and attempts at smoothing feathers, if I were in position wherein I donated to this fund, I would not trust the man behind it with my money any further and demand a refund. I am also highly doubtful any of the donors are happy with these new developments. If you have donated to the Privilege Grant, I would like to try and get your voice heard.
