Great article! Well written and this one really speaks to me. I’ve shared so many of the same concerns as you, worrying that my writing isn’t deep enough or important enough, and I too have feared that a lack of any real emotional pain in life may only serve as a hindrance to quality writing. That’s why I try to write daily on Medium. Even if it’s shit writing, it’s still writing. I’m trying to overcome those spurious fears.
I think Tim is right. A lack of suffering doesn’t necessarily preclude quality writing. Just write and don’t worry about.
And, while I agree that Cobain is a far more relevant musician and songwriter to our generation, would it really be so bad to be Brett Michaels? A lot of people loved Poison and they were successful for what they did, even if their lyrics were stupid.
Anyhow, man, keep it up. Good stuff.
