How to make the basketball team.

My name is James Koran, and although I haven’t published in a while I typically write about business and digital strategy. Today, however, I’m going to write about a different and equally important part of my life. Basketball. I’m currently running travel-team tryouts for my local club. For the past…

As 2019 winds down, and my to-do in 2019 list get’s shorter, I’ve started to wonder if we don’t overplay the mental divide between “this year” and “next year.” After all, there’s truly nothing fundamentally different between 12/31 and 1/1. For many, the end of the year is a planning…

I’m writing this on my phone.

I’m writing this on my phone. It really has me wondering about the impact that might have on my posts. For sure they’ll be shorter simply because writing is so slow… but what else changes? I tend to compose in my head before my fingers move. This isn’t the case…

Too short?

In school, teachers demand essays of a certain length. Google suggests blog posts of < 300 words might not rank well. But how short is too short? I’m a talker, and I tend to write how I talk. I ramble. In a modern world of sensory overload, perhaps we should say just enough to deliver our message. If that’s only 70 words. In 2020, I resolve to practice brevity.

I can’t write today

Although I’ve committed recently to writing many days per week, I can’t seem to find it in me to write today. Give my commitment to “hitting publish” I’m going to simply write-out how I feel. Luckily, no one’s reading! I’ve started three different drafts today and I’ve deleted each of…

Bathrooms, Water, Wifi

Wifi has integrated itself seamlessly into our culture of hospitality, especially in professional settings. It’s the first thing that I offer clients that are meeting at my offices (after water, and perhaps pointing them to the restroom.) It’s also a standard question for coffee shops & cafes. So much so that I’m actually perturbed if a coffee shop doesn’t have wifi available. I also find that having a place’s wifi & password saved on a laptop or phone is also an indication of belonging. I don’t need to ask where the bathrooms are or for a wifi password. I’m at home here.

“Do it now.” OR “Let me focus.”

Completing an operational task takes X mental energy. Let’s assume that this is fixed regardless of when you do the task. Carrying that task around in your brain (or even on a todo list) so that you remember to do it and when it needs to be done, etc… takes…

Throw & Catch

In college, I worked the night shift at a coffee shop that was very often completely deserted. This left me plenty of time to catch-up on my studies in between pouring coffee and steeping tea. …

14 Working Days…

This year, I’m taking off the entire Xmas week. That means that Friday 12/20 is my last “real” working day of the year. 14 days doesn’t seem like much time in the context of a year, but it’s a ton of time from an individual productivity standpoint. How will I…

Video Games & Teamwork

I had 4 consecutive days of family time over “Thanksgiving Weekend” and because basketball isn’t yet in full swing a spent a chunk of that time playing Fortnite with my 3 sons. For those that don’t know Fortnite is a hugely popular online game that, in its most common game…
