I see where he’s getting at. I am a history buff, so I don’t think we have to completely remove ourselves from our ancestors — but I do think it’s worth recognizing that all of us have good and bad in our blood. Let’s face it — whether we have colonial or slave blood, physical and sexual abuse and exploitation of humans and animals is in all of our ancestries. So I don’t think it matters if we call ourselves Muslim or Jewish or Canadian or Chinese. But being overly proud of those parts of our identity is kind of a joke. Having human decency is more important. Hold doors open for all types of strangers.
