How to import Evernote into DayOne

vague depiction of my emotions towards Evernote export settings.

When you are reading this you most likely have a journal that was trapped in Evernote — and you might want to migrate it to DayOne, which allows you to keep a diary across platforms and devices (especially Android and iOS). I have finally found a (somewhat tedious) way to get Evernote entries into DayOne and thought I should share this with you since most of the online help requires some weird scripts that I never actually got working.

If you find a better way, please feel free to comment and share your process improvements. I have chosen to not include screenshots because App Layouts and designs might change. This process worked in January 2019…

(Update: Still works in May 2020)

You will need:

  • Android Phone
  • Mac OSX Desktop
  • Desktop Webbrowser
  • Evernote Desktop App (OSX)
  • Day One App for Android
  • Day One Account
  • Dropbox Account
  • Diaro App on Android
  • Diaro Online Account
  • Day One Desktop App (not required but good to check)

So here is what I did in short:

Evernote -> Diaro Online -> Day One

So let’s get started:

On your Desktop:

  • Export the Evernote Journal Files as an ENEX file using the Desktop App (OSX in my Case)
  • In Diaro Online:
  • Sign up for Diaro Pro Account. I have purchased it on my Android phone in the grey past for around 2,99€.
  • On Desktop go to the Diaro Online Service: https://diaroapp.com
  • Connect your Diaro Account with your Dropbox Account in the Diaro Online Settings
  • Import the ENEX files via the Import Menu there. Depending on your file size this takes a short moment to be processed. Your Evernote Journal Entries should now appear in Diaro Online.
  • Check if Diaro backs up your entries in a Dropbox Folder (usually in Apps/…)

On your Android Phone:

  • Download the Diaro App and the Day One App for Android — sign into both.
  • Sign into the Diaro Android App and check if your dropbox is connected.
  • Your Diaro app should now sync and your online entries should appear in the app.
  • Go to Settings Menu and check where your local backup is stored. If necessary, create a backup.
  • The DayOne help mentions that you should create a backup using the + icon and uploading a backup to dropbox, but I am not sure if that is actually required. I’ve added the process link here for reference.
  • Now open the DayOne App and sign into your account.
  • Go to Settings / Import and navigate to your Diaro Folder on your phones local storage. You should see a .zip File of your latest backup. Choose that, wait. Once the import is completed you should now see your old Evernote Journal entries in DayOne.

Congratulations. You have managed to migrate your personal data from a company using consumer-hostile practices to a cross-device, cross-platform service.

I hope this was helpful for you and you finally got parts of your memories back into your journal…. and again, if you find a better way, please feel free to comment and share your process improvements.
