One of the advantages of being a living fossil (in addition to having ridden dinosaurs in my youth — which was really cool) is perspective. We studied “1984” in high school prior to 1984. At that time the book was viewed as a high brow political version of a “Mad Max” post-apocalyptic world: A fictional dystopia; a parable.

In the intervening decades the “1984” quotes and references have increased as they stopped being so far from everyday US life. Your fine albeit depressing essay points out that the US is now partially living in a “1984” reality. If we don’t change paths soon this will not end well.
