Want to learn how your business can become eco-friendly? Well then you should know the 3 most important factors of any green business. Each factor is equally important, and provides the basics for operating and maintaining a green business. These factors are: Technology, Employees and Management.
Modern Day Technology
With all of the technology available today, there are plenty of ways a business can reduce their energy consumption and pollution. Technology can reduce a company's impact on the environment in a multitude of ways, and new advanced tech can also help track your companies energy consumption.
Tracking your company’s energy consumption is a great tool to use to make sure your company is staying eco-friendly. Combined with other tech, you can easily manage the cost and use of energy in the workplace.
This factor is a little less obvious, but employees play a crucial part in keeping a green business. The everyday functions of a company are completed by those who work there, so employees must be open to cutting back their own energy at work, and open to policies that may help the business stay eco-friendly.
If you're unsure how to get your employees on board with new policies, it all begins with training and education. Communicating and promoting energy saving ideas to your employees is a crucial factor for running a green business.
Employees should also be taught how to use green technologies that further help your company save energy.
Explored in our latest blog post, a company’s management plays a crucial role as the lead voice for helping the environment. An owner or management who are passionate about being eco-friendly will have a great impact on a company’s energy saving goals.
As all three of these factors are equally important, the paradox is that the leaders of a company have the biggest effect on a company’s goals and achievements.
Management will contribute to both the implantation of new technology and employee training and awareness.
Research was conducted by Elpida Tachmitzaki, Eleni Didaskalou and Dimitrios Georgakellos on the effect of these three factors and how they contribute to the implantation of green practices.
Their article, Energy Management Practices’ Determinants in Greek Enterprises included the results of a survey containing 129 small and medium sized greek enterprises.
Their hypothesis was proven correct by their research of these 129 greek businesses. They confirm, “The results for the research hypothesis H1 suggest that the three factors (a) the use of modern technology, (b) the encouragement of employees’ involvement, and (c) the implementation of an integrated energy management system have a positive impact on the implementation of energy management practices in Greek enterprises”(Tachmitzaki etc 2019).
This quote shows that together, these three factors contribute to the betterment of eco-friendly practices and functions within the workplace
As I stated before managers of the company have a big impact on the introduction of environmentally friendly practices. Tachmitzaki etc. write “the higher the commitment of senior management in an enterprise in terms of energy issues and their management, the more improved energy management system that will be developed within this enterprise”(2019). This shows that management is a crucial part of a businesses goals to become a green company. Management has the power to make a change in business practices and a businesses attitude towards the environment.
The authors also believe that with all of the modern technology available for use, becoming energy efficient is a much more attainable goal. They write “The achievements of modern technology are the starting point for a company to implement practices that will give it an impetus to improve its energy management”(Tachmitzaki etc. 2019). Here, the authors are showing that technology will push a company to more environmentally suitable actions and that adapting new equipment and services can propel a business into turning green.
For the best results for energy management, the authors argue that an energy management system will be the key in making a company more eco-friendly. The authors explain “The system sets the structured framework and it has a decisive impact on the formulation and implementation of effective energy management practices, thus highlighting its value”(Tachmitzaki etc. 2019). The authors explain here in their conclusion that a proper energy management system will make a big difference in controlling energy consumption and increase the value of other energy saving practices in the workplace. This is very important information for anyone looking to adopt green practices within their own businesses.
