“Most of white people are mourning what the killing of Justine means: That Whiteness isn’t guaranteed to protect them…”
Who are these “most of white people”? I’ve never met these people. I have seen a whole lot of white people be called racist for making the exact point that whiteness is no guarantee of privilege. In fact, IME, most black people don’t want to talk intersectionalism, because that would mean admitting poverty and gender and sexual orientation and religion and national origin and disability are all reasons white people face discrimination — and that upsets the narrative that Old Billy Joe Bob the hillbilly, graduate of the 8th grade and a collapsing 100-year-old schoolhouse, living in his trailer without electricity, drinking fracking water from the crick, is the cause of all your problems. At least you’ve got a scapegoat when it’s too hard to challenge the real power behind the system — and hey, their system helps make sure there are plenty of poor, uneducated white people to shit on so you won’t challenge them, right?
