One is scale — today, software systems that handle millions of customers are routine, often with rapid growth.
JDs killed the application developer

This makes me think of how once “once upon a time” if you wanted to have a website up you hired/found one “sysAdmin” who did everything from content to styling to hosting to SEO to everything.

Over time those have gradually become more specialized and some have even become commoditization.

With that said I have two possibilities for you:

  1. that the role of Application Dev has now transitioned to the Product Manager, which is for someone to be able to manage the full delivery pipeline of a product keeping all the stakeholders in mind; or
  2. what we’re seeing now is the middle, transition stage before we get to a point where some of the pieces of web-development end up getting commoditized.
