Education

Emma Brown, The Washington Post, DeVos criticized teachers at D.C. school she visited — and they are not having it — I’m flummoxed at DeVos’s presumption. The notion that she can identify what a good teacher is from five minutes in a classroom with no training and no experience in any of this is so absurd. I would add that she’s not wrong that teacher need to be empowered to teach, and I would further add that to the extent some teachers out there are in “receive” mode, it might be because of centuries of the widgetization of education and the treatment of schools as factories, with production standards placed on the factory workers. Charter and parochial schools aren’t going to fix the factory model.

Valerie Strauss, The Washington Post, Former D.C. schools chief takes on DeVos: ‘Sorry lady…. this is so amateur and unprofessional’ — there’s a paragraph in here that’s basically exactly what I said above.
