Tennis

Louisa Thomas, The New Yorker, The General Joy of Roger Federer, Wimbledon Champion Once Again (July 16, 2017) — I still remember how upset I was when Nadal beat him in the 2008 Wimbledon final. I’m more of a Federer fan than a Nadal fan, but that wasn’t even it; it was this worry that it was over, that The Great Federer of 2004 to that moment, a Federer I’d hardly had a chance to see because I was in law school for most of that time, a Federer I was looking forward to having a chance to see more often, having just graduated, was over before, for me, it had ever begun. Of course I recognized how greedy that was, how four years at the very top, dominating in ways few others ever have, was more than we could ever hope for. Thankfully, while he’s had some downs since then, and while he’s not an immortal lock to win everything he enters (except Roland Garros) as he once was, I was wrong — it wasn’t over. We’ve now had nine more years since then, with Federer changed, certainly, including in ways that Thomas identifies in this piece, but with his essence and with the joy that comes from watching him undiminished. I’m not crying. I’m also not crying about Cilic crying during the match.
