The Day’s Reading, July 25, 2017

Tomorrow is book group.

Alison Herman, The Ringer, ‘Ozark’ Is So Familiar That It’s Fun (July 25, 2017)

Maureen Ryan, Variety, TV Review: ‘Midnight, Texas’ on NBC (July 25, 2017) — it’s apparently real bad!

The Fandango

Callum Borchers, The Washington Post, Scaramucci probably can’t stop leaks, even if he does ‘fire everybody’ (July 25, 2017) — if you actually stop all the unauthorized leaks, then the only leaks will be the authorized ones, and everyone will know which are which

Callum Borchers, The Washington Post, Sarah Huckabee Sanders poured gasoline on the Trump-Sessions fire (July 25, 2017)

Ashley Parker, The Washington Post, Press aide resigns as White House purge begins: ‘I’m going to fire everybody,’ says Scaramucci (July 25, 2017)

Prachi Gupta, The Slot, Anthony Scaramucci Begins the White House Press Office Purge (July 25, 2017)

Amy Davidson Sorkin, The New Yorker, When Anthony Scaramucci Fell in Love with Donald Trump (July 24, 2017) — Amy Davidson got married!

Ben Lindbergh, The Ringer, The Bill James of Japan (July 25, 2017) — this is great

Tom Ley, Deadspin, Suddenly, Jose Altuve Is The Best Player In Baseball (July 25, 2017)

Stacey Gotsulias, Baseball Prospectus, What You Need to Know: Relentless Royals (July 25, 2017)

Patrick Dubuque & Brett Cowett & Aaron Gleeman & Martin Alonso & Mark Anderson, Baseball Prospectus, Transaction Analysis: Panda 2.0 (July 25, 2017)

Patrick Dubuque & Kate Preusser & Emma Baccellieri, Baseball Prospectus, Short Relief: The Sub Shop and Other Stories (July 25, 2017)

Sam Miller, ESPN, Baseball’s numbers revolution is spreading to Latin America (June 21, 2017) — been sitting in my inbox for a while

Paul Pringle & Harriet Ryan & Adam Elmahrek & Matt Hamilton & Sarah Parvini, Los Angeles Times, An overdose, a young companion, drug-fueled parties: The secret life of a USC med school dean (July 17, 2017) — I mean, it sounds like he was doing his job at the same time that he was partying. Is it because the particular drugs are outside of what we’d expect from his social class that we’re making such a big thing of this? If he were just a drinker, would this be an “explosive” story?

Justin Miller, The American Prospect, The Perils of $7.25 (July 25, 2017)

Domonique Foxworth, The Undefeated, All 22: Why decertification of the NFLPA and other unions could pay off big (July 25, 2017) — It isn’t clear to me what would happen to the run of the mill players under this system. There’s already a lot of randomness in who’s a have and who’s a have-not (the worst guy in the league gets the minimum salary; the best guy not in the league, who is probably indistinguishable in skill from that other guy, gets paid the minor-league/practice-squad/development-league salary). Without a negotiated minimum salary, though, and without a CBA mandating guaranteed contracts, would the bottom third of the league get utterly shafted? Good for Steph Curry/Bryce Harper/Tom Brady (my football knowledge is wildly out of date) for being able to get more than they could without salary caps, max pay, and so forth, but what about JaVale McGee and Koda Glover and Patrick Chung? I don’t think Foxworth addresses those folks in his piece.

Lovell Estell III, Stage Raw, Rhinoceros (July 25, 2017)

Jeffrey Frank, The New Yorker, Donald Trump, John McCain, and the Politics of Decency (July 25, 2017) — nah

Bryce Covert, The New Republic, The Central Contradiction of the Democrats’ “Better Deal” (July 25, 2017) — I don’t think that’s what concern trolling is, at least in my understanding of the phrase, but in any event, I think this is right

Sarah Jones, The Nation, The Left’s Opportunity in Wisconsin (July 25, 2017)

John Cassidy, The New Yorker, The Senate Health-Care Vote Is a Travesty (July 25, 2017)

Soumya Karlamangla, Los Angeles Times, Doctors and drug abuse: Why addictions can be so difficult (July 24, 2017)

Addy Baird, ThinkProgress, Ryan says Trump has the right to replace Sessions with someone who will fire the special counsel (July 25, 2017)

Aaron Rupar, ThinkProgress, After bizarre speech, Boy Scouts of America distances itself from Trump (July 25, 2017)

Foreign Policy

Mike DeBonis & Karoun Demirjian, The Washington Post, House passes Russia sanctions bill, setting up veto dilemma for Trump (July 25, 2017)
