First things, first. The key to a successful resume is starting off with the right format. But did you know there were different resume formats you could be using? Most don’t, which causes more confusion when it comes to applying for jobs and communicating the appropriate skills and experience on paper.

Let’s start with the basic components of a resume.

The components listed below should always be included on your resume:

  • Skills
  • Professional Experience
  • Accomplishments
  • Competencies
  • Education

When/if applicable, these components should be added in:

  • Volunteer
  • Licenses
  • Languages
  • Special skills
  • Publications
  • Honors
  • Affiliations
  • Seminars

The pieces above are important in communicating with the recruiter and/or hiring manager about your skills and experience as they relate to the role(s) you are interested in.
