This week for Top Pick Tuesday, I chose the novel “Red Rising” by Pierce Brown.

This novel is a gripping and intense science fiction novel that takes place in a dystopian future on Mars. In a stratified color-coded society, each color serves a rigid role in a hierarchical structure. The story revolves around Darrow, a young miner in the lowest caste known as the Reds.

The revelation that Mars is habitable and that the ruling Golds have been tricking the lower castes for eons upends Darrow’s entire world. Darrow has a goal to become a Gold and sneak into the Institute, their elite training program, in an attempt to exact justice and retribution.

The book looks at issues of power, class conflict, and the results of ruthless authoritarianism. It blends aspects of military strategy, political intrigue, and personal development as Darrow makes his way through the convoluted and dangerous upper echelons of the Golds realm. As he navigates this unfamiliar territory, he learns the full cost of disobedience and the scope of the Golds’ manipulation.

Readers will enjoy an interesting world-building that combines aspects of science fiction and fantasy, its exciting characters, and its fast-paced plot. Through his vivid narrative, Pierce Brown crafts a gripping novel about resistance, selflessness, and the pursuit of justice in a society defined by its color-coded caste system. The book lays the groundwork for an epic trilogy that delves deeper into the ramifications of questioning the status quo in the quest for a fairer and more equitable world.
