For City Dwellers, Hard Summer Travel Rolls into Relaxing Fall

“Thank God this summer’s almost over.”

It’s a phrase you don’t expect to hear too often, and, according to the speaker, it’s not something he would have said “two or three or even four months ago. But boy, summer is exhausting.”

The source? A young urban professional with a plate of truffle fries in front of him, sipping a Guinness, Ray Bans hooked to the collar of his untucked shirt.

“I mean, don’t get me wrong, I had a phenomenal summer. I traveled, I ate, I drank. I spent time with family and friends. But seriously, all that activity has me wiped. I’m looking forward to fall where I can just settle into my city-living routine, you know? My East Village apartment needs a little love!”

The sentiment is one shared by many young urban professionals, affectionately referred to as “Yuppies.” For the young adults who are a part of this trying and difficult demographic, summer is a whirlwind; fall, a chance to catch up.

“With all the social obligations that summer requires, it can get to be a lot. I feel like if I wasn’t sitting at the beach I was deciding which beach to go to — which is hard with everything going on at work all the time. And if I can hop on a plane and then spend time on a beach in Seattle, it’s kind of a no-brainer.”

“Summer seems like it’d be relaxing, but have you ever tried going to work on a Monday tired from a week long vacation or a weekend binge? It’s hell.”

“I just need a chance to catch up, to take a little ‘me’ time. I hear Boston is beautiful in the fall, and I’m planning on spending some time there when I get back from San Francisco in September.”
