I point out that violence with firearms is concentrated in the inner cities because it shreds the argument that American society is hopelessly violent. By and large, it is not. It is only one particular segment of our society. The hundreds of million guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens are not a problem. It is the small fraction in the inner cities that are used in crime. That points to where the solutions must happen: not by taking away everyone’s guns, but by fixing the thug culture of the inner cities.
I’m not surprised the existence of the Second Amendment saddens you. It was enacted by those who had been oppressed by their fellow Englishmen to the point they had to remove themselves from English rule. They had just fought a war to liberate themselves from tyranny, and were determined that future generations would retain their arms so they could do the same thing should it become necessary.
Guns are used by bad guys to cause death and destruction. Guns are used by good guys to prevent or stop death and destruction. Guns are used defensively over two million times a year in the US. The vast majority of those uses are never reported, because simply revealing oneself to be armed more often than not stops an attempted crime in its tracks. Criminals prefer unarmed victims.
English subjects may well meekly hand over their weapons, and their freedoms. American citizens will do neither. Until you understand that, you will continue to miss the point. This is typical of the British and the Europeans, who smugly think they know enough about America to have a valid opinion, while in fact revealing their utter ignorance.
