I found that long road trips were conducive to creative breakthroughs, particularly across open stretches with no good radio stations. During the hours of mulling complex ideas and writing in my head I would naturally get to serial “aha” moments. During these trips I would often play my road music, favorite albums whose every note I knew by heart so that while they often engaged my emotions there was never an element of speculation or surprise about their crescendos or resolutions. Lately I’ve taken to listening to podcasts on the road and, little surprise here, the trips go by quickly and I do little creative thinking. Oh well, there’s still the shower and walking the dog…
