The Coming ‘Robot Revolution’ — Events Will Be Bigger, Better Because of It

Predictions abound concerning the effects of the coming “Robot Revolution.”

One prediction we here at JMH Events think is flatly wrong claims that cyborgs outfitted with advanced artificial intelligence capabilities will soon replace vast numbers of human workers, leaving many of us involved in event planning-and-management out of a job.

Basically, this prediction holds that activities currently the domain of event sponsors, exhibitors, planners, managers, marketers, and support staff will eventually be taken over by machines that look like either a less-menacing Arnold Schwarzenegger or a less-oil-starved Jack Haley.

The crystal ball-gazers embracing this view foresee that the work involved in conceptualizing an event, mapping out the details, making all the arrangements and negotiating the contracts, registering the guests, turning on the lights, rolling out the red carpet, and a zillion other things will be performed by the robots.

Prediction Won’t Play Out

While the Robot Revolution is indeed coming, we’re reasonably confident it won’t play out that way.

Granted, some people in and around the events industry may lose out to robots.

For example, an artificial intelligence system that can author an airtight services contract faster, cheaper, and better than can a crack team of human lawyers is likely going to send the flesh-and-blood attorneys into thumb-twiddling mode.

But while some jobs will probably go away, we have a hunch that others will remain secure. And maybe even increase in number.

That certainly was the experience the last time a revolution swept through the business world.

The year was 1975. Or it may have been 1980. Who knows, who cares? The point is, it was a long time ago in a galaxy business office far, far away.

In those days, accounting work, engineering tasks, and research activities in all types of businesses were done manually. Naturally, lots of employees were required.

Then there came disruptive change in the form of business computers (and, later, personal computers).

Seemingly overnight, many accountants, engineers, and researchers trudged off to their nearest unemployment center, their services no longer needed since the newly installed computers were able to perform them much more facilely and cost-effectively.

Why Robots Aren’t a Threat

Things looked bad for workers — until, that is, people started noticing other accountants, engineers, and researchers still had jobs.

Why didn’t they get laid off? Because they possessed certain desirable skill-sets which smartly complemented the capabilities of the business computers.

Those workers saw the business computers as productivity enhancing tools, and they made use of them accordingly.

As a result, the workers accomplished more, began aiming higher, and ultimately proved themselves too valuable to fire.

For these employees, business computers were not career threats.

Same deal now. Artificial intelligence will not cause ruin in the events industry. Rather, it will become a fabulous new tool that will allow us to do more for clients at less cost and to generally be greater assets than ever.

This is why we at JMH Events are right now eagerly investigating ways of incorporating the power of artificial intelligence to our business model.

We see the Robot Revolution as a positive development that will free us from many time- and labor-intensive tasks so that we can concentrate on unleashing incredible creativity and service excellence on behalf of our clients.

So, no, robots are not destined to become our new overlords. We feel very confident in saying that they are going to instead be indispensible aides in our ongoing quest to deliver increasingly extraordinary special events.
