The SkyBridge Alternatives (SALT) Conference — A Beautiful Blend of Business and Benevolence.

It’s that time of year again! For those in the alternative investment community and beyond, there is excitement in the air as the annual SkyBridge Alternatives (SALT) Conference approaches.

The 2017 SALT Conference will take place from Tuesday, May 16th — Friday, May 19th at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, Nevada. This year, featured speakers include: Joe Biden, 47th Vice President of The United States; Bill Ackman, CEO and Portfolio Manager, Pershing Square Capital Management; Valerie Jarrett, former Senior Advisor to President Obama; Eric Schmidt, Executive Chairman, Alphabet Inc.; Mike Tyson, Former Boxing Heavyweight Champion of the World; and, many more.

The SALT Conference, now in its ninth year, was originally conceived in 2008 by Victor Oviedo, a Partner and Head of Business Development at SkyBridge Capital, the global alternative investment firm that produces the event. The story goes that following the financial crisis, President Obama informally instructed Wall Street to avoid utilizing federal bailout dollars on events in places like Las Vegas. Complying with such instruction, many Wall Street firms cancelled their plans for Sin City events. Seeing an opportunity, Victor approached Anthony Scaramucci, the Founder of SkyBridge Capital, with an against the grain idea to fill the financial services conference void in Las Vegas by producing what ultimately became known as the SALT Conference. The gamble paid off. Today, the SALT Conference, which envelops top thought leaders, public policy officials, business professionals, investors and money managers from over 42 countries and 6 continents, is not only the premier alternative investment event in the world, but also enjoys a seat at the table with the most respected conferences on the planet, such as, The World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

Over the past 3 years I have been lucky enough to attend the SALT Conference and am anxiously awaiting the onset of this year’s agenda. Like Carnegie Hall conductors, Victor, Anthony and their SALT Conference team, year after year, have been able to harmoniously orchestrate the congregation of over 2,000 of the brightest minds in the world to rub elbows, have some fun, and listen to cutting edge insights from more than 100 speakers from the worlds of finance, politics, pop culture and philanthropy.

Unlike any other event I have attended, the SALT Conference is in a league of its own with regard to its meticulous execution of program offerings which seamlessly tie together business and benevolence. Beyond bolstering the professional capabilities of its attendees through access to a more robust network and the provision of actionable ideas, the event goes above and beyond to educate delegates on and involve them in a wide array of philanthropic causes which can and do benefit society at large.

While the SALT Conference takes place every May under the shining Las Vegas sun, the mood that emanates from the event each year always reminds me of the iconic scene in Charles Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’ when Jacob Marley’s ghost exclaims, “Mankind was my business. The common welfare was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, benevolence, were all my business. The dealings of my trade were but a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my business!”

For SkyBridge Capital and their SALT Conference, it’s clear that mankind is their business.
