Gender Roles In Fashion
“Stereotypes are the common beliefs and values of the group, culture or religions and the gender stereotypes are fixed ideas about men’s and women’s traits and capabilities and how people should behave based on their gender. For example common gender stereotypes about the color blue and pink for boy and girl. In fact these stereotypes could lead also to discrimination. But clothing for both men and women is culturally defined by the society. Cultural norms and expectations are related to the meaning of being a man or woman and are closely linked to appearance means clothing, because the clothing is the most important point of representation of the identity” (Akademir, 2018).
Is it fair to assume traditional gender roles when it comes to the exuberant world of fashion? How do we decide where to divide the line between an article of clothing belonging to men or women. The truth is, that dividing line is becoming more and more thin as we progress into the 21st century. One hundred years ago, the way of the world was much more traditional. Men and women’s roles within society were set to be the way that it was, with little leniency (Lindemuth, 2011). The common As gender roles have changed within our society, they’ve also changed in fashion. Just how women have grown into more roles and become more involved with our society, their fashion trends have also started to become a part of the way men’s clothes are designed. This was most likely not something that designers gave thought to in the early 1900’s, but fashion is change.
So, the relationship between gender and fashion is an important point, even with different parameters. It means that If society changes, norms changes and ıf the norms changes, fashion changes or vice versa. And also these changes can come out with the changes of perceptional perspective. (Akdemir, 2018)
It changes the culture and is a tool for people to express themselves. High end fashion designers have become familiar with women’s fashion, since according to Shefaly (2015), men make up 97% of the women’s fashion industry’s creative director’s, leaving only 3% being women. They begin using it as an influence in men’s designs. At first, you might be picturing a man in a dress with heels, but this isn’t necessarily what they mean when they say that. The cuts, patterns, and designs have become integrated in the design process, and experimented with in many developed prototypes. All ideas aren’t successful, however some designs hit the market with overwhelming success.
We are more likely to express ourselves through our fashion than most of us can do with our words. It’s an outward expression of our inner selves. It gives us freedom and the ability to get creative if we feel like it. There is no right or wrong in fashion, which is the beautiful thing about it. We aren’t obligated to conform to society’s generic fashion sense based on your gender. Nowadays, some people don’t even conform to one of the two genders most of us only consider. With time comes change, and with change comes fashion. Fashion is change, and vice versa. The rules are there to break, and have fun with they way you want to be seen. We all have a body that we’re able to be unique with when it comes to fashion. How will you decide when it comes to this major form of expression, that we all know as fashion?
