A firewall is meant to protect computers to prevent other uses from access to a private/secured network. Firewalls prevent unauthorized Internet users from accessing private networks connected to the Internet. According to Indiana University, “All messages entering or leaving the intranet (i.e., the local network to which you are connected) must pass through the firewall, which examines each message and blocks those that do not meet the specified security criteria.” Many people around the world use computers. For example, firewalls work like a filter between your personal computers/network and the entire world. Anyone around the world will attempt to breach your personal computers, however with firewall, they are known to protect your computers from breaches. To sum it up, firewall protects computers.
If you happen to have a computer, it’s recommended that you use firewall. According to Windows, “ If you use a computer at home, the most effective and important first step you can take to help protect your computer is to turn on a firewall.” If you happen to have more than one computer, it is important to establish protection on all computers. Not only are firewalls beneficial for personal users, it’s very beneficial for businesses. Large corporations always make sure to protect their extensive networks. Firewalls have the ability to prevent employees from sending type of emails or data outside of their personal networks or access to certain websites. Firewalls can limit or not allow people from sending/filing or access to whoever. Whoever is the man in charge, can allow limits and rules with firewalls in corporate business. According to Geeksonsite.com, “Having a firewall in each company’s internet connection allows the business to setup online rules for the users.” Not only for business, but for your own personal computers you are sharing with others. Everyone needs their privacy.
Their are multiple types of firewalls. Examples of types of firewalls are Packet-filtering, circuit level gateways, stateful inspections , application level gate aways, multiplayer inspection. In a packet filtering firewall, it operates at a router and compares packets brought to a set of criterias, such as IP addresses, packet types and port numbers. According to Techtarget, it defines circuit level gateways as “Monitors the TCP handshaking going on between the local and remote hosts to determine whether the session being initiated is legitimate — whether the remote system is considered “trusted.” They don’t inspect the packets themselves, however. Stateful Inspections examines each packet to see if the packet is established to TCP session. Application level gate aways are combined with circut-level gateways and filter packets. According to Techtarget, it defines multiplayer inspection as, “Multiplayer inspection combines packet filtering with circuit monitoring, while still enabling direct connections between the local and remote hosts, which are transparent to the network.” Those are the basics of types of firewalls however engineers continue to develop and improve firewalls in the world.
The NIST (National Institute of Standards and technology) separates into 3 basic types of firewalls. The three types are Packet filters, stateful inspections and Proxys. According to Techtarget.com, “One way to compare firewalls is to look at the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) layers that each is able to examine. TCP/IP communications are composed of four layers; they work together to transfer data between hosts.” Data gets transfered across different networks, it travels from the highest layer through medium layers then to the lowest. As it continues, each layer continues to add more information.
