A look back on 2014 — My yearly review infographic — and how to fucking nail it.


Some people only look forwards, and other only backwards. Personally, I’m the forward-thinking type. To me, it’s insanity not to reflect on the past constructively, to better adjust your aim moving forwards.

If I had 30 seconds to sell you on why you should reflect, here’s the analogy I would use: Life — and your success in it — is entirely made up of the decisions you choose to make, and nothing else. Gauging if you're making good decisions or not is one of the most important things you can do. Otherwise, you are literally the blind leading the blind (the blind being yourself, trying to lead yourself to a better future). That just doesn't make sense.

So what the hell does the above actually mean? It means if you set new years resolutions last year, and woke up the first day of the new year, and depressingly said to yourself in bed: “Well fuck me, I'm still not making the money I want to” (or whatever your goal was), that you made poor decisions throughout the year. It’s that simple. It wasn’t the economy. It wasn’t bad luck. You’re the driver, no one else. But don’t worry, I’ll explain how to upgrade your GPS below :-)

Want that hot bod? Eat healthy and exercise. Make the decision to replace sugary-shit with real food grown out in nature, and make the decision to exercise, even if it’s just walking every day.

Want to be a high-earner? Stop fucking around and making excuses all the time, and make the decision to become an absolute beast at what you do, and demand that you get compensated well for it.

This is the whole point of reflecting: to better yourself.

Bettering yourself happens by figuring out your flaws and improving them. I shit you not, that’s literally how it works.

I work day in and day out optimising websites to make them more profitable at our web-design studio. I track how people are using each website — and discover how to improve the design — to ultimately get more people to take action (action = profit = happy client).

I use this exact same method in my life. I track my Fitness with Fitbit. I track my sleep with Sleep Cycle. I track my productivity with RescueTime. I track my list of tasks with Stack. I track my finances with Pocketbook. I tack my health by getting blood-tests regularly. I clearly write down my goals for the year, and break them down into what actions I need to get done EVERY. SINGLE. MONTH.

No guesswork. Just well planned decisions.

If I've felt tired for the last few days in a row, I simply have to look at my iPhone to see what my sleep has been like. Maybe I’m only sleeping 4–5 hour nights. Maybe the quality of my sleep is poor. Maybe I’m taking too many Nootropics. Whatever the case, I don’t need a doctors-diagnosis, because I know exactly what I need to change.

Getting back to the point, reflection is important because you're creating a feedback loop with yourself.
Do → Measure → Learn. Repeat.

At the end of the day, think of reflecting like a map.

You're at point A. The goal(d) is at point B. To actually get to your destination, you have to keep checking the map to see if you’re on the right path. Otherwise you will end up way off course.

Do this with your life, because it’s such an obvious and essential thing to do. Don't sit around dissatisfied, wondering why you didn’t achieve your goals. Know why you didn't, and constantly check-in to see how your progress is going. Prevent yourself from repeating poor decisions.

This formula will spell it out for you: same decision = same result. Think about that one.

In the words of Eminem, life is no Nintendo Game. If you really want to be the person who dominates, take time to reflect and figure out how to do so.

If you don't, others will, and you will end up at 80 years old regretting not doing more with your life (and trust me, I'm no fan of oxygen thieves).
