Diversity

I’m no sociologist, but I feel more comfortable in diverse surroundings than I do in groups of people with the same skin color. In fact, I tell anyone who is willing to listen how I am SO at home in Belize surrounded by a rainbow of ethnicity. Hell, I’d be willing to guess that most white Americans would be comfortable in places where they’re not a majority, once they let their guard down.

After all, diversity is the essence of this country. Don’t just blow that sentence off, I’m serious: Diversity (of thought, religion, culture, ethnicity, etc. etc.) is the CORE PRINCIPLE of the United States. It’s why we have two (and it should be more) political parties — because one ideology would be sociological suicide (think ISIS). No, we are mutts born into a nation where all men are created equal. Diversity is in our DNA even though most of us spend our lives trying to avoid it. Don’t believe me? Look around your neighborhood. Are your neighbors the same ethnicity as you? It’s ok, I think this “flocking together” thing is natural, to a degree (it’s the illusion of “safety”).

But there’s another level to being a human that goes beyond surrounding ourselves with people who look like us, speak like us, worship like us, and earn money like us. And that level is something like freedom. Look, I’m no sociologist, but I am a copywriter — and that’s pretty close.
