“A great day lies ahead in the not too distant future”
Last week, after my studies, I headed out to Panda Express for lunch. After lunch, I broke open the fortune cookie that Panda Express offered me. When I first read it to myself, I rolled my eyes because I thought this was the most ridiculous of all the obscure fortunes I had ever seen. But when I reread it, I have to admit, I was impressed by the appropriateness of the message — “A great day lies ahead in the not too distant future” because it summed up some thoughts I was lately having about long-term planning and the choices I’ve made to get to where I am now.
I think that fortune cookies offer us a possibility more than they offer us a prediction. That one tiny phrase had the power to make me reconsider how I felt about my day, my life and about myself is pretty powerful. I think that when people read such messages, they feel compelled to make it true for them, to rationalize it, like I did. I know there are lot of people who thinks that fortune cookie messages are waste of paper, but I think that everyone might secretly hope that their fortune comes true in some way or another when it is a good prediction.
In life and work, we’re constantly faced with decisions that are present –focused or future-focused. We must learn to balance these two by sticking to our plans so we can actually accomplish our goals. But sticking to it is the hardest part.
There’s no doubt that staying focused, learning self- discipline, believing in what you’re doing, and operating from a place of trust and support can help you reach your long term goals. Sure, the road ahead may be bumpy, inevitably there are challenges and setbacks, and you may question the decisions you’ve made. But staying future–focused will get you to your destination. Like one of my favorite quotes in Hindi, not sure who said this but goes something like this “Kehte hain agar kisi cheez ko dil se chaho … to puri kainaat usse tumse milane ki koshish mein lag jaati hai”. And it translates roughly to “ if you really desire something from the heart … then the whole universe will work towards getting you that.” So figure out what it is you want, and let the universe help you get there!
