Jeanette, I agree that it is such a big responsibility as a teacher to not choose sides to certain issues and be neutral. It is difficult to choose the route to take to expose students to certain material. I believe that as you go on to be a teacher find a school that suits your beliefs (classroom culture/vision/ language/teams/ lesson plan structure/ etc.). You want a place that values you and feels like home. I love the point you make to bring students culture into the classroom because it gives them pride and a voice. The students are so excited to learn when they see things they can make connections with. Empowering the students and incorporating their interests is key to their growth in all subject areas. As you choose material to integrate into your lesson plans modifications and changes will always occur. There are times where you will have to re-teach the content entirely again but this is okay because you learn different techniques and ways that students learn.
