Jesus is King Album Review

The inclination from Kanye’s The College Dropout to his newest album Jesus is King, West’s message has remained consistent. The word of God has always had some prevalence in his work. However, with this ninth studio release, Jesus is King has not surpassed any other album, if anything JIK is the worst Kanye album yet.

From poor mixing to simple lyricism Kanye has dropped the ball with his new album. This is truly upsetting to big Ye fans such as myself. While listening to his most recent interview with Big Boy, all 40 kiutes were equally exhilarating and interesting. Kanye has hit the pinnacle of his genius. In my opinion he is one of the most conscious rappers in the game right now. You don’t have to agree with all his views to know he’s great thinker. Ye’s problem is his delivery. He has great things to say, but has trouble getting it out in a way that isn’t controversial.

In a recent interview with Zane Lowe Kanye expressed that his reasoning behind jesus is King was to convert non- believers. While that is great reasoning, I’m not too sure on how this was accomplished. In the album Ye speaks about consumerism, but then fails to bring up his overpriced Yeezy brand. He needs to reach deeper if he wants to convert non believers. It takes more than superficial gestures, and a couple of biblical references to speak the true word of God.

While I am extremely proud of Ye’s growth as a person, this album is a bit disappointing. We were expecting a little more from a vet like kanye. He has never let us down with impeccable beats and clever lyricism. Jesus is King just didn’t make the cut this time. However twitch kanye being Kanye he has transcended his image from one that cares about reviews. Kanye is Kanye. He could get a hundred nbad reviews and people will still buy and listen to the album because of the man behind it. His face, and brand sells.

This album lacks depth, and it makes it hard to look away from his politics and recent statements. However, while being a follower of Ye and his tuning in to his new journey i understand that we can all agree to disagree. That I don’t have to agree with his views and to listen to his music or still be a fan. I think the thing that’s most upsetting is this album fails to to show what we love about kanye the most. Kanye has always been very upfront about his shortcomings. He expresses his hypocrisy, and never shies away from his moral failings. This is what has made him one of the most compelling artists of our time. That complexity is not shown in Jesus is King.

All in all, Ye, I’m going to support because it’s you. I’ve been a lifetime fan, and i don plan on walking away now that times have gotten tough. My rating on a scale from 1–10 is a 6.5. I was definitely expecting more, we all were.
