Self sufficient Orchard

Its no surprise to see panic buying when the world is faced with pandemics, fuel shortages and the prospects of war, currently we are facing unprecendated times with the outbreak of Covid 19. Hopefully in time we will all get through this, and with the extra time on our hands due to stricter measures and confinements it might be a good time to start planning a vegetable patch, kitchen garden or even orchard if you are lucky enough to have some garden space or terrace. In another series of articles I will offer suggestions to create these edible green areas, and we will start with the orchards for those living in warmer Mediterranean or Californian climates.

On advertising hoardings throughout the world, the typical imagery used to portray the healthy Mediterranean lifestyle will inevitably include displays of delicious, bright oranges and lemons. But even though a scenic drive through any part of the peninsular will include swathes of citrus groves, seemingly growing without any obvious care and attention, it doesn’t mean that however, they will grow in any soil or conditions.

We are blessed to be living in a warm, temperate climate in Mediterranean countries and parts of sunny California — and that certainly helps, but that is just one component that is needed if you wish to see the ‘fruits’ of your labour in creating an orchard. A great deal of hard work and a ready supply…
