Creating Meaning Multimodally

Vietnam, Basquiet, Achebe, lamb of god & Waterson oh my! I wholeheartedly agree and am glad you went with pictures from Vietnam as powerful examples from our informal group discussion. I thought your examples were well placed but wondered if war was an image that could have sustained throughout the project as you do a close reading of George and Marbeck.

The cultural impact that images had on this side of the Atlantic is indisputable. Politicians have already taken steps in the ensuing half century to make sure that American caskets and civilian deaths would be buried and in many cases with held from the public. Wartime images are seen as a sort of subversion to political structures because they address issues immediately in a way that through words would take substantially longer.

I also wondered about the presentation of your close readings being presented in chronological order for the majority of the text produced. For example, you say under p.268 you add ‘the intensity of the work’ which seems to be a publishing of your own notes and highlighted portions in the textbook. The “So Then” section is great because it highly contextualizes itself and ties together the threads followed linearly through the text into a cohesive bit. I don’t know if the arrangement of quotes could be ordered in a different way, your explanations for inclusion underneath the boldface is great. I just wonder if it warrants inclusion for such a large % of the piece and thus a re-reading of the text from the experience of others in the class.

Great work though! Truly impressive amount of work amassed into this piece. I look forward to taking the discussions around the block a few times before we meet up for class this next week and hope to get some other opinions in here soon.
