Relapse is a common reality for many individuals struggling with addiction and substance abuse.

In fact, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, 40–60 percent of people with substance abuse disorders will experience a relapse at some point during their recovery.

It’s an uncomfortable topic that many people don’t want to talk about. But is relapse an inevitable part of recovery? Does it have to be part of the process?

The answer is complicated. Relapse doesn’t have to be a part of recovery, but it can be. It depends on the individual’s circumstances and the type of treatment they receive.

For many people, relapse can be a sign that treatment is not working and it’s time to try something different. It can be a wake-up call that more intensive treatment is needed or that alternative approaches should be explored.

At the same time, relapse can also be a sign that a person is progressing in their recovery. It can be a reminder that recovery is a process and that it’s normal to have setbacks along the way.

The key to successful recovery is to learn from relapse and use it as an opportunity to make changes and move forward.

So what can you do to reduce the risk of relapse?

  • Understand Your Triggers: It’s important to understand the triggers that can lead you to relapse. Common triggers include stress, boredom, and social situations. Knowing what your triggers are can help you take steps in avoiding them.
  • Strong Support System: A strong support system is crucial throughout your recovery. This can include family, friends, and professionals who can help provide guidance, accountability, and encouragement.
  • Have a Plan: Create a solid plan for when cravings or urges arise. Some calming activities can be taking a walk, talking to someone, or distracting yourself with a hobby.
  • Take Care of Yourself: Your physical and mental health must be a priority. After years of destruction, our bodies need enough sleep, a balanced diet, and exercise. It’s beneficial to your mental health to return to the activities you enjoy.

Relapse doesn’t have to be a part of recovery, but it can be. It’s important to understand relapse is a normal part of the process and to take steps to reduce the risk. With the right support and a plan in place, recovery is possible and relapse doesn’t have to be a part of the journey.
