Crazy Rich Asians

Crazy Rich Asians is one of the BEST romantic comedies I have personally seen in a long time. Probably because the last true romantic comedy I’ve seen was Think Like a Man and that movie came out in 2012. It’s a movie that plenty of people can relate to in terms of traditions and rules that happens in families (no matter what your race may be). So it’s not just a love story that ends in a happy ending, but it comes with plenty of life lessons that we can all learn from. I would personally take my own parents to see this movie because I feel like they can relate with it even MORE than I can. My parents are very traditional and I know with this movie, they’ll understand why some of the events that happen in this movie were done. It’s one of the first movies since The Joy Luck Club that came out in 1993 to feature an all Asian cast. This was a lovely movie to watch. A very great movie for couples to see, and if you’re single just like me you should still be able to enjoy the movie (no matter how lonely you might feel after). There’s a scene that may just bring tears to your eyes because it’s played to a beautiful rendition of “Can’t Help Falling In Love” by Kina Gannis. Overall this movie is filled with laughs, tears and life lessons that anyone and everyone can relate to. Definitely one of the best movies to end the summer with.

Awkwafina as Peik Lin

AWKWAFINA AS PEIK LIN IS THE HIGHLIGHT OF CRAZY RICH ASIANS.

I have personally NEVER heard of Awkwafina until I heard that she starred in the Oceans 8 that came out two months ago. When I saw her in this movie, I INSTANTLY wanted to see MORE of her in future comedies that she may pursue. She brought the comedy to 1000% every time she was on screen. I just couldn’t help but smile in every scene she would be in because I knew that she was going to steal the scene every time. It was scenes with her along with Ken Jeong that gave the movie the title of a romantic-COMEDY. They made the father-daughter relationship work so well that I would seriously believe that they are related. What worked well in this movie is that there wasn’t too much comedy to the point that a moviegoer wouldn’t take this movie seriously. There is definitely more romantic scenes than comedic scenes, but director Jon M. Chu did a fantastic job mixing in these scenes and creating a balance throughout the movie. All I’ve got to say is, MORE AWKWAFINA MOVIES IN THE FUTURE!

Constance Wu as Rachel Chu and Henry Golding as Nick Young

Lastly, the chemistry between Constance Wu and Henry Golding in this movie is one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. A great performance by Henry Golding especially since this is his debut movie in the US. He did so great that some people are saying he can be the next James Bond? Plenty of rumors and fan castings already going around and it’s only been ONE performance by him! I’m sure with the success of Crazy Rich Asians, we will be seeing more of Henry Golding in future movies (or maybe even a cameo in Constance Wu’s Fresh Off The Boat?). Speaking of Fresh Off The Boat, Constance Wu is so beautiful in this movie. She brought an aura to the movie that made scenes of her and Henry Golding to another level. As I told my friends after the movie, they can really be an actual couple, but Henry Golding is married so that won’t be able to happen. Her role in Crazy Rich Asians is very different to the role she plays in Fresh Off The Boat. On Fresh Off The Boat she plays a mom who’s basically the boss of the family, but in Crazy Rich Asians, she’s placed in a situation where she has to adapt to a new environment and a family that is very traditional. She plays both roles well and I hope to see her in many more movies in the future. She shouldn’t constrict herself to just FOTB, it’s time for more Constance Wu led movies. This movie brings in everything you want in romantic comedy. It brings many emotions in a span of 2 hours and life lessons that makes us all relate in one way or another. I recommend watching this in the big screen, or even if you want to wait until it is available on Blu Ray. Go see it! They just announced that a sequel is already in the works, so we won’t have to wait too long for the next Crazy Rich Asians movie. Though the next movie is an adaptation to Kevin Kwan’s second book, China Rich Girlfriend, I’m sure Jon M. Chu will do a great job in making it just like Crazy Rich Asians. I can’t wait!
