The Potato Metaphor for Emotional Labor
Kate McCombs

I love this metaphor — but I reckon we can take it one step further! Potatoes can be cooked in so many different ways, such as chips, fries, wedges, baked, potatoes and hash, and there isn’t a wrong or right way to do your potatoes — it’s all just down to your preferences. So when we perform emotional labour, we have to check in to see how the person would like their potato rather than just assuming they like their potatoes done the same way as us. And when we seek emotional labour from others we need to tell people what we’re hungry for.

One clap, two clap, three clap, forty?

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
