Canada’s diverse job market offers a range of rewarding career options, healthy work environment, the scope for professional growth, respect for workers’ rights and several employment benefits. To avail these privileges, many job seekers aim to pursue gainful employment opportunities in Canada. In order to do so, they must be citizens or permanent residents of Canada or hold a valid work permit. By obtaining the Canada Work Permit jobs in the country’s growing economy can be freely accessed by foreign nationals.

There are two types of work permits:

An Employer-Specific Work Permit allows foreign workers to work in Canada under a specific employer, for a predetermined duration and, if applicable, at a particular location. The employer must provide a Labor Market Impact Assessment or offer of employment number — which should be included in the work permit application.

An Open Work Permit allows foreign workers to work for any Canadian employer, provided the employer is not listed as ineligible and does not offer certain inappropriate services on a regular basis. Only specific persons are eligible for getting a job in Canada on an open work permit.

Eligibility Requirements

While eligibility requirements vary depending on whether the candidate is applying for the work permit from within or outside Canada, or at a Canadian Port of Entry; certain conditions must be fulfilled by all candidates. An applicant must:

  1. Prove that they will leave Canada once the work permit expires.

2. Provide all required documents to showcase that they can enter Canada.

3. Showcase sufficient funds to support themselves and accompanying family members throughout the stay in Canada and for returning home.

4. Have no criminal record, and obey the law (a Police Clearance Certificate may be required).

5. Not pose a threat to Canada’s security.

6. Have good health, and appear for a medical examination if required.

Not intend to work for an employer who is listed as ineligible or who offers certain inappropriate services.

Application Process

Step 1: In order to pursue foreign jobs in Canada, the aspirant can apply for a work permit through a paper-based process, or online through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website. Within 30 days of applying, the candidate must provide biometrics.

Step 2: The application is processed by IRCC, which may request an interview, medical examination, or additional information. There is no specific processing time. If the application is approved, the applicant will receive a letter stating that they are allowed to work in Canada.

Step 3: Upon arriving in Canada, the candidate must showcase this letter — along with the visa, passport, travel documents, and other supporting documents — to a border security officer, in order to receive the work permit.

The work permit clearly outlines the type of work the permit holder can do, the employer they can work for, where they can work, and for how long they can work. With the Canada Work Permit jobs in the world’s most popular immigration destination are no longer a distant dream, but a tangible possibility!
