I think it’s a stretch to blame capitalism for this, though I’m sure that certain aspects of that system exacerbated the situation.

Your mother was abusive. It’s disturbing that you try to come up with various flaws in your father’s character/behavior to explain why she was beating his head in.

If the genders were reversed people would be horrified by this.

Also, abuse is more common than you might think among the wealthy. It’s something of a stereotype to think of the “working class domestic violence” — Stanley Kowalksi in “A Streetcar Named Desire” — but in fact, battering occurs across all socio-economic groups.
