“Eastern” and “Western” medicine are misnomers. Premodern medicine looked pretty much the same all over the world. Only with the invention of microscopes powerful enough to see the microbial world did medicine advance beyond herbs, bloodletting, prayer and hope. You can’t understand what cancer is without understanding what a cell is, or infectious disease without seeing viruses, or infection without bacteria. Microbiology revolutionized medicine, in both the East and West.
